Paperboard

Paperboard

'ABERDEEN was last night left reeling from a major jobs blow after Europe’s largest plasterboard manufacturer announced the closure of the historic Mugiemoss paper mill in the city with the loss of almost 300 jobs.

The mill, owned by BPB Paperboard, has been part of the city’s industrial landscape for more than a century. But it is to close its doors in June when almost the entire 276-strong workforce is expected to be made redundant.

The mill produces 225,000 tonnes of paper each year, principally to satisfy the BPB Group’s demand for high-performance plasterboard liner.

But the company claimed the mill, now known as the Davidson Mill, was no longer viable because of the cost of investing in the latest technology.

David Anderson, the group’s managing director, said: "With the trend in the paperboard industry towards lower grammage and lower-cost papers, made possible by increasingly large-scale investment in new capacity, BPB’s remaining paper mill - at Aberdeen and producing higher grammage from what is now a relatively narrow width paper machine - has become uncompetitive.

"The group has therefore confirmed an agreement to source greater quantities of paper from a leading UK paperboard manufacturer and proposes to cease manufacturing operations at Davidson Mill from June," he added. '

Biden Event August 2009 Repower

Biden Event August 2009 Repower

Yesterday, August 5, Repower America organizers and volunteers joined together with other groups to welcome Vice President Joe Biden to Michigan to announce $1.36 billion dollars in federal funding for clean energy technology research for the state—an investment expected to create 6,800 jobs in the next 18 months and 40,000 jobs by 2020. The diverse group that came out all shared the recognition that Michigan, with over 15% unemployment, desperately needs green jobs and clean energy innovation to help pull us out of our economic slump.

NextEnergy, in Detroit’s TechTown, was the perfect place for the Administration to deliver this message—it’s a hub of innovation and entrepreneurship in the middle of America’s industrial heart. A national investment in advanced battery technology is a smart move for America, and people here in Michigan are excited about it. That’s why all of us came together yesterday, to thank the vice president for bringing clean energy jobs to Detroit and doing the right thing for our economy, or national security, and our future!
